Nancy Pellegrini is a Beijing-based author, journalist and photographer. Since 2006, she has worked as the Fine Arts editor for Time Out Beijing, specializing in Asian theater and music. Her articles have appeared in numerous international publications.

Staff Writing

Time Out Beijing      June 2005 to present

Classical Music and Opera Editor: Responsible for writing listings and monthly previews, profiles and/or issue stories as well as periodic features on classical music, opera, Chinese traditional music and Chinese opera. March 2006 to present. 

Performance Editor: Responsible for writing listings and monthly previews, profiles and/or issue stories as well as periodic features on Chinese and Western theatre, ballet, modern dance and Chinese traditional and classical dance. November 2005 to present. 

Columnist: Responsible for writing monthly volunteerism column “Get Involved” which profiles local, national and international Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Social Enterprises.  June 2005 to present. Also wrote “Visitors’ Page”, covering cultural and tourist information (August 2005-March 2006).

Freelance Writing

Have written on classical music, theatre, ballet and modern dance for the following publications: South China Morning Post, Christian Science Monitor, Macau Tatler, Gramophone, The Strad, International Piano, Modern Painters, Strings and Hong Kong Festival Arts Magazine, have written on social issues for South China Morning Post, Time Out Beijing and WWF.com. Presented a series of three-hour lectures to university Sociology classes about Korean culture which focused on culture of the life cycle, such as traditions and practices concerning weddings, marriage, pregnancy, childbirth, education, old age and funerals [fall 97-spring 98].

China


CornfieldRadio Writer / Presenter, Dell English Program - China Radio International (CRI). Present phrases and idiomatic expressions for daily one-minute program running every half hour, seven days a week, write and edit copy, which appears weekly in Beijing Evening News [summer 05-present]

Television Writer / Presenter, Olympic English - Beijing Television (BTV) 6. Presented items of Olympic history for weekly television show played on over twenty channels throughout China, taught key words and phrases, wrote and edited copy [spring 03-spring 04].

Television Writer / Presenter, New TOEFL - China Educational Television (CETV). Wrote and performed thirty twenty-minute shows for myself and host, instructed viewers on taking the Listening Section of the TOEFL (Teaching of English as a Foreign Language) exam, taught idioms, listening comprehension, and how to answer multi-sectioned timed questions [summer 03].

Video Presenter, Beijing World Press - Educational VCD. Taught pronunciation for Educational VCD (Video Compact Disc) Grasp the English Pronunciation. Edited copy [spring 03].

Online Instructor, Dell International English. One of two instructors chosen to teach special online conversational English classes during Beijing's SARS period (schools were closed), which were later used for student recruitment [spring 02].

Korea

Television Writer / Presenter, Korean National Educational Broadcasting Systems (EBS). Co-hosted weekly thirty-minute TV TOEIC (Teaching of English as International Communication) program training those preparing to take the TOEIC exam. Wrote and edited televised copy, trained new presenters, wrote training manual on television performance, consulted school chairman on casting of successive television shows [spring '96-spring '97].

Television Writer / Presenter, MBC National Network Television. Acted as Conversation Partner in nationally televised Pan-Asian English Contest, aided contestants in creating conversations based on specific role-play situations. Wrote and advised on conversational situations [summer 96].

 

Television Interviews

China

Interview subject, China Central Television International (CCTV) 9. Was interviewed as writer / photographer for Bannerman Tang’s Craft Store, a fifth generation traditional Chinese craft shop; wrote explanations of crafts and did photography for website and store displays [winter 02]. 

United States

Interview subject, CAS Cherry Point Television, North Carolina.  Participated in the Bank of Arts Exhibition for the Commemorative 50th Anniversary of the Korean Conflict, which featured my book, Through Western Eyes: Korea, and a display of original photographs [spring 00].
